“No.” Rosa stepped forward with her hands on her hips.

“You’re not dropping this bomb on my department.”

“Rosa, please.” Tom’s voice softened, as he turned to the county historic preservation officer. “I’m not dropping anything on you.

I’m simply agreeing that the property owner feels better working with Sara. This has absolutely nothing to do with your department. Sara’s on special assignment, remember.”

Sara had the feeling he was trying to talk around her. It took her a moment to realize that he was telling Rosa that her Bexar County office couldn’t be held responsible if anything went wrong. All responsibility was going to fall squarely onto Sara’s shoulders.

“I’m not going to let you throw her to the dogs,” Rosa started, but Sara reached out and touched her arm.

“Rosa, he’s right. Mandy and I have a good working relationship. I’d like stay on and help get everything taken care of.”

“That’s the attitude, Sara,” he said. “Of course, you realize that until the committee makes a decision to accept the property, the state historical commission can’t be held responsible for any monetary disbursements.”

Sara gave him her sweetest smile. “Trust me, Tom, I’ll make sure your office isn’t burdened with any monetary issues.”

He was practically skipping as he made a hasty exit. The three women stood on the porch watching the Lexus disappear down the road.

When the car was almost out of sight, Mandy turned to Sara. “I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“I hope I do too,” Sara replied.

Rosa looked at her. “Do you know what you’re doing?”

“No, but I feel better knowing we’re in charge rather than Tom.”

Mandy gazed out over the front field. “I certainly agree with that.”

“What’s everyone agreeing to?”

They turned to find Arcy standing behind Mandy.
